Sue’s work begins as a response to place and relates to her physical and emotional experience of location, social and industrial histories and events of place. She considers the transitory view and the unpredictable landscape due to environmental pollution and coastal erosion. Often her work evokes romantic notions of far off lands, space and freedom but it may also evoke images of edges and boundaries.
It is the entirety of the subject, the interaction of the elements on the land, sea and sky which interests her most. She loves the freedom of working spontaneously on location, watching the changing moods of the view as slices of colour tear through the sky and reflect on the land or sea below.
She enjoys exploring colour, form and space through the medium of acrylic, a fast drying paint that enables loose, spontaneous, expressive works containing sweeping brush strokes, surface texture, mark-making and drawing by scratching into the surface. Areas of the paintings often appear opaque, hinting at things hidden beneath deceptively simple representations of the environment.
