Anne Byrne is a practicing artist working predominantly in an expressionist tradition. Her work is celebrated for her expressive painterly approach.
Anne’s primary medium is oil paint but she also uses mixed media to explore new territories and ways of visual communication. She is constantly exploring ways of seeing and recording that combine the discipline of ‘careful observation’ with the use of mark-making as an expressive form. In a wider context, she also seeks to explore visual language to consider ‘sense of place’ within the framework of a consideration of the expression of feeling.
Anne was a Semi-Finalist in 2023 SKY ARTS Landscape Artist of the Year and has also appeared as Artist in Residence on ITV’s Love Your Weekend hosted by Alan Titchmarsh. She has written about her experience in Painters Online and been featured in Cheshire Life.
Anne has produced commissions for private buyers all over the UK as well as being commissioned by Chester Racecourse to create a painting in oils capturing the famous Racecourse.
Expressionist, figurative traditions have exerted heavy influences on Anne’s approach and have been fundamental in her artistic development as a painter and observer. The painterly qualities of the work of painters such as Walter Sickert, Stanley Spencer, Lucien Freud, Joan Eardley and Euan Uglow have played important roles as well as the work of artists such as Norman Ackroyd who have explored both illustrative and abstracted responses in their approaches.
