Andy McFadden was born in Liverpool but grew up on the Wirral/Cheshire border. He studied fine art, graduating in 1984 and started teaching a year later. He taught Art in two Cheshire secondary schools and retired from teaching in 2021.
McFadden’s oil paintings are concerned with a balance between the experienced and the observed. The familiar places he regularly visits are continually recorded, remembered and imagined. This, coupled with the manipulation of paint and the discoveries that arise from a cycle of putting on and taking off, is what facilitates his landscape compositions.
McFadden’s studies of the landscape around his home inspires his work and in his larger pieces he alters any picturesque ideas of the landscape in favour of creating a deeper connection. McFadden seeks to take the viewer from the familiar to the indefinite, playing with perspective, space and time in order to achieve a penetrating understanding of the landscape he encounters.
