Angela Slack

Angela Slack works from her home studio in Shropshire. After studying BA(Hons) Fine Art at Exeter College of Art and Design and a post-graduate diploma in stained glass at Central St. Martin’s she went on to gain a Master’s Degree in Ceramics and Glass from the Royal College of Art, London. She had success in all areas of her practice before taking a very long, pause to raise her 5 children. Angela returned to painting with renewed commitment two years ago, exhibiting across the Midlands and the North West.

Each painting is an investigation where drawings, colour studies, mono prints and collage combine together glimpses of memories, experiences of place or everyday objects. Hand drawn marks can combine with self made collage papers, direct paint application and glazed layers, bringing richness and depth to the surface. These abstracted images free the viewer from visual assumptions, enabling an awareness of the paint, not to represent, but as a process of making. She is often reminded of the methods used in stained glass work when combining shapes and calligraphic brush marks in her paintings.

Recently, Angela has been exploring ideas around absence and presence, that teetering, between all the daily thoughts and that space where we can hold for a while before moving through to the next state or activity. A very precious position, as she works full-time alongside her art practice.
