Les Alpilles, St. Rémy

The rugged limestone mountain range of Les Alpilles was an obsession for Van Gogh as he looked out from his room over Mt Gaussier during a year of treatment at the hospital adjacent to the monastery St Paul de Mausole in St Rémy.

Amongst the places we visit, a few stand out and overwhelm us, for me Les Alpilles is one such place.

“I was here, I saw the landscape and it mattered to me…”

The lino prints, etchings and monoprint explore this dramatic mountain range including the Roman settlement of Glanum, Saint Sixte Romanesque church, near Eygalieres, Lac Perou, St Rémy and the rugged formations of the mountains themselves.

The mistral, blowing along the Rhone Valley, regularly clears the sky of clouds and moisture leaving a pure rich blue and a plant life of singular lushness…
