Kate Buckley is a York-based sculptural artist working in coloured porcelain. Her work is rooted in a Japanese aesthetic tradition — quiet, controlled and deeply attentive to light, shadow and negative space. Through a distinctive process of press-moulding onto folded structures, she translates delicate geometry into a permanent medium — a fold fixed in time.
Working in multiples, repeated elements shift from line to curve, generating movement and volume through subtle asymmetry and irregularity. Intimate in scale but expansive in concept, her larger works combine porcelain blooms with oak branching structures whose fractal geometry mirrors the patterns found in nature. Background tones shift between dark and light, marking the passage of time — dawn to dusk, season to season.
Colour is added directly to the porcelain body and the work remains unglazed, preserving the geometry of the fold and allowing light and shadow to complete it — endlessly reshaping the forms and revealing, as Tanizaki understood, where beauty truly resides.
An award-winning artist, Buckley’s work is held in galleries and private collections across the UK and abroad. Originally from North Wales, she now lives and works in York.
