Having spent most of her life living at the coastal edges of the land, Marianthi’s work is greatly informed by a sense of place and by her deep connection with the littoral landscape and its cycles of ebb and flow. Her abstract mixed media works are an emotional and expressive response to the dynamic, natural environment found on the Hilbre tidal islands and Dee Estuary sands close to her Wirral home.

Each piece is created collaboratively with the elements. Out at the strandline, an imprint of the sea is embedded into light-sensitive papers that have been exposed to waves, sand and sunlight – the result of a unique set of conditions at one particular moment in time. Back in the studio, these ‘seaworks’ are selectively embellished with gold leaf, pastel, fibres or wax. Information about the specific tidal conditions that helped to create each piece sits alongside many of the titles.

Marianthi has exhibited widely in solo and group shows across the UK. Copies of her Collector’s Edition hand-crafted books are held in galleries and museums in the UK, Europe and Greenland, and in private collections internationally. Her first monograph, Sea Signatures, was published by Kozu Books in 2022. She is a co-founder of The LAKE Gallery.
