Each piece is created collaboratively with the tidal elements. Out at the strandline, an imprint of the sea is embedded into light-sensitive papers that have been exposed to waves, sand and sediment – the result of a unique set of conditions at one particular moment in time. For this collection, Marianthi has further developed the process by working with nocturnal as well as daytime tides. Silver gelatin darkroom papers are submerged in shallow waters at night, and a flashlight is used to create a ‘photogram’ imprint of the rippling tide. The papers are then re-exposed to daytime tides, using the cyanotype process to create multi-layered ‘blueprints’ of tidal cycles.
Artists’ books form an important part of Marianthi’s practice, offering an alternative and individual approach to presenting collections of work. Her handmade editions combine the traditional craft of bookbinding with photography, mixed media and print techniques.
Marianthi has exhibited widely in solo and group shows across the UK. Copies of her Collector’s Edition hand-crafted books are held in galleries and museums in the UK, Europe and Greenland, and in private collections internationally. Her first monograph, Sea Signatures, was published by Kozu Books in 2022. She is a co-founder of The LAKE Gallery.
